methods is a fundamental denominator — they use liquid-based smear preparation, with instrumentation and methodologies differentiating each specific platform. Since the late 1990s, we have seen the increased use of collection vials containing a liquid medium (alcohol-based) preserving the cells. The samples are processed in the laboratory into a thin layer of cells, stained and screened with an automated system. If required, a manual confirmation by light microscopy is done. Although conventional cervical smears have been the norm for decades and used to manually screen for cervical cancer and precancerous cells, liquid-based cytology and automation have steadily gained ground, and although not necessarily a threat AuTomATion in CytoLogy Challenging cases represent failure to detect abnormalities existing at the time of screening

Automation-assisted versus manual reading of cervical cytology (MAVARIC): a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND The standard for reading cervical cytology is for a cytoscreener to manually search across an entire slide for abnormal cells using a conventional microscope. Automated technology can select fields of view to assess abnormal cells, which allows targeted reading by cytoscreeners. In the Manual Assessment Versus Automated Reading In Cytology (MAVARIC) trial, we compared the accuracy of...

Dr. Bibbo's Presidential Address on Automation in Cytology: Were Her Predictions Right, Wrong, or Somewhere in the Middle?

In 1983, Dr. Marluce Bibbo gave the Presidential Address at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Cytology in Denver, CO, USA. The lecture was entitled "Analytic and Quantitative Cytology," a field in which Dr. Bibbo was intimately involved. In the presentation, she included a summary of 30 years of work already accomplished, the present state of the art, and musings about issues encoun...

Automation in high-content flow cytometry screening.

High-content flow cytometric screening (FC-HCS) is a 21st Century technology that combines robotic fluid handling, flow cytometric instrumentation, and bioinformatics software, so that relatively large numbers of flow cytometric samples can be processed and analysed in a short period of time. We revisit a recent application of FC-HCS to the problem of cellular signature definition for acute gra...

Diagnostic utility of Liquid-Based Cytology in the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is worldwide most common cause of cancer related death. A use of LiquidBased Cytology (LBC) in non-gynae has been increasing. Aims: To assess the diagnostic utility of LBC in the diagnosis of lung cancer from the aspirated material either by endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) or CT guided trans thoracic needle aspiration (TTFNA) from lung ma...

To appear in the Analytical and Quantitative Cytology and Histology

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is currently the world's leading cause of adult death from a single infectious disease. Sputum examination remains the cornerstone of diagnosis in epidemic situations. Automated identification of tubercle bacilli on sputum specimens would have many benefits. Objective: To use an automated method to detect tubercle bacilli in sputum specimens. Study Design: Using fl...
